A Fatigued Robot

AI-assisted robots have demonstrated their incredible capacities, from high-precision assembly to clothes folding to solving Rubik cubes. While we, the researchers and the world at large, publish and celebrate the shiny successes, it is worth reminding ourselves that each successful application usually involves thousands of training hours and countless failures. In fact, the robots spend most of their time failing.

A Fatigued Robot aims to evoke people’s awareness of the “invisible” trial-and-error process. This installation consists of two screens. The upper screen presents a hopeless robotic arm constantly trying to assemble a timber piece in simulation, and the lower screen shows a well-trained real robot successfully assembles a chewed-up timber piece.
